No Processing = No Lactose Intolerance
One of the leading questions we are asked when sampling our delicious raw milk at events is, “Does this cause lactose intolerance?” It is overwhelming just how many people have a sensitivity to processed milk. Stomach cramps, bloating, discomfort, and other commonly noted symptoms are what consumers say they feel when they consume processed milk. Why? (We will get to that below) This article was written to start a bigger conversation that needs to be had! Raw milk does not cause digestive discomfort or milk “negative digestive reactions”. Basically, when someone drinks raw milk… they are able to enjoy their glass with ease.
So, So Many “Milk Alternatives”
In America, there are hundreds of milk alternative brands that claim that those who are sensitive to dairy products can easily consume their products without digestive issues. What they are NOT telling you is how processed the food is or how altered the ingredients are remaining inside the product. Impact of Processing on Milk
One of the easiest ways I explain to a confused (soon to be raw milk fan) consumer how HARD it would be for our body to digest processed milk is through an example I created called “The Barcode Method”. What is a barcode? Well, in the consumer industry we use barcodes to help our computer systems scan, process, identify and categorize products. Once the barcode has been scanned, then our computers know exactly what it is, how much it costs, and where it came from. Follow me on this… imagine our digestive system is the computer and the food we consume is the barcode. We drink raw milk (the barcode), our body scans it (enters the gut), and we digest it without any discomfort (barcode was easy to read with no missing lines or digits). Wow, that was so easy! All day long we then will repeat this process! We are feeling amazing!
Now, imagine you take a barcode and remove several lines or digits (maybe even mix them around). That is what processing and pasteurization does to food. It changes it, destroys and alters it. You drink the processed milk (for example a popular pasteurized plant milk), your body scans it (enters the gut), and it tries to digest it… but it is confusing. The computer doesn’t recognize this new barcode. It has missing lines and digits. Well, that is when the gut sends your body signals of discomfort or negative reactions. The body has many ways to show signs of discomfort or confusion from processed foods (gas, bloating, allergies, intestinal irritation, etc.) Wow, that isn’t so easy or enjoyable! Why would you want to do this all day long or ever repeat this process? Your body starts to feel badly over time and you are feeling overwhelmed with the question, “Why can’t I drink milk anymore?“
The Human Gut Is Simple
When you take all things into account, the human body is very resilient. Even when you consume highly processed foods your body will more than likely “put up with it” for a while before it starts “falling apart”. When you feed your body processed, denatured food it will react and send you signals of discomfort. Over long periods of time; however, the body builds up health issues and major digestive problems. This is what has been reported to us over and over at events from consumers.
